Congratulations to those that matched! To those that weren’t successful, please take care of yourself – it’s truly a tragedy that thousands of medical students/physicians who are willing and able to help patients aren’t able to find spots for graduate medical education each year. Keep your chin up and keep moving forward one foot in front of the other. Your health is the most precious asset you have, and you can stand up again to apply again (if you choose).
In the words of Winston Churchill, “This is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.” These words, although about a world war, also resonate deeply with the journey of medical students as they transition through one of the most pivotal moments in their careers: Match Day. Many outside of medicine aren’t aware that this is the day when senior medical students and others applying for residency spots find out where they will spend the next one to seven years of their life. This day, steeped in anticipation and nervous excitement, marks a significant turning point. For some, it also involves heartbreak since they weren’t successful in matching, or perhaps matched at a program lower down on their rank list (their choices they submit to the ‘match’). Those applicants should not lose hope as this hopefully will represent a small speedbump in their long career as a physician.
For many, Match Day feels like a blur. Speaking from personal experience, the day seemed all the more surreal because I had already navigated the ‘early match’ for ophthalmology a month prior. The build-up, the anxiety, the culmination of years of hard work all condensed into one moment when you tear open an envelope and learn where the next phase of your life will unfold. It’s a whirlwind of emotions, relief, and, at times, disbelief.
The months that follow Match Day can be likened to a period of diastole, a time when the heart relaxes after contraction, allowing itself to be filled again. It’s a metaphorical breather for many medical students to sort out their lives before the relentless pace of internship begins. It’s a precious window to catch up with loved ones, address long-neglected personal health and dental issues, and mentally prepare for the demands of being a service provider to others. This period is essential, not just for logistical arrangements but for mental and emotional preparation for the journey ahead.
Transitioning into internship (as a first year resident) represents a seismic shift in identity and responsibility. You move from being a student, whose primary concern was taking a series of tests, to a junior doctor tasked with the care and wellbeing of patients. This transition can be daunting; the weight of responsibility is palpable, and the learning curve is steep. Yet, it is during this challenging time that some of the most profound learning happens and lasting relationships are formed.
Personally, internship was where I met some of my closest friends (and my wife!). Despite the geographical distances that now separate us, the bonds forged during those tumultuous first years of doctoring have endured. There is simply a lot of learning that happens amidst the on-the-job training. The camaraderie experienced during those days is unique and, in many ways, irreplaceable (as an attending physician we often scurry home to our partners/kids and don’t spend much face-to-face time with our colleagues). The shared experiences, the mutual support in times of stress, and the collective joy in our patients’ recoveries knit us together in a way that is difficult to replicate in later stages of our careers.
Reflecting on the journey onwards from Match Day, it’s clear that the journey is transformative. Not only do you evolve as a professional, but you also grow immensely as a person. The challenges, while daunting, are also profoundly rewarding. The friendships and relationships formed along the way are treasures that enrich your life immeasurably.
